Waymo to Launch Driverless Taxi Trials in London with Safety Drivers in 2025

Waymo, an autonomous taxi company, plans to introduce self-driving taxis on London’s streets starting next year, making the city the first in Europe to host such vehicles. The company has already deployed these taxis in San Francisco and Tokyo, offering millions of fully autonomous rides. Initially, the London taxis will operate with safety drivers behind the wheel as Waymo secures necessary permissions from the Department for Transport and Transport for London to provide fully driverless services in 2026. Other companies, including Uber and UK-based Wayve, are also planning autonomous taxi trials in London. Despite these developments, the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association expressed skepticism, viewing driverless cabs as unnecessary and doubting public trust, particularly for transporting children. The UK government has been promoting autonomous vehicle pilots, citing potential benefits such as job creation, improved road safety, and economic growth. However, incidents in the US involving Waymo taxis, including illegal maneuvers and operational glitches, highlight the challenges of widespread autonomous vehicle adoption. Waymo remains confident about the safety and reliability of its service and aims to introduce it to Londoners soon.
