Waymo Plans Fully Driverless Ride-Hailing Service in London by End of 2026, Pending Regulatory Approval
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle division of Google, has announced plans to launch fully driverless ride-hailing services in London by the end of 2026, specifically in the fourth quarter, provided that UK regulators grant the necessary approvals. Currently, around 24 Waymo vehicles are operating in the city, but they are still in the human-driven mapping and data collection phase. The project will progress to testing with safety drivers in accordance with the UK government’s Code of Practice for autonomous vehicles, before eventually moving to fully unmanned operations where passengers can hail rides without a human driver. Waymo representatives emphasized the company’s strong safety record, claiming their vehicles are significantly safer than human-driven cars, particularly in protecting vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. They highlighted advanced sensor technology that provides superior perception compared to human capabilities. The UK Minister for Local Transport, Lilian Greenwood, welcomed Waymo’s decision to choose London as its first European city and stressed the government’s focus on safety while accelerating regulations to enable automated vehicles. However, uncertainties remain, including the exact initial operating area—starting small and expanding from there, currently involving testing in 19 boroughs—and how well the technology will adapt to London’s unique traffic patterns, pedestrian behavior, and passenger dynamics, which differ from US cities like San Francisco or Phoenix where Waymo already operates. The company downplayed concerns about traffic congestion, noting that their fleet size will be modest compared to the overall ride-hailing market and could improve efficiency. Waymo’s experience in varied urban environments, including handling jaywalkers, was cited as evidence of readiness, though the true test will come with real-world deployment in London’s challenging conditions.
