DuckDuckGo adds filter to block AI-generated images in search results

DuckDuckGo, a privacy-focused search engine, has introduced a new feature that allows users to filter out AI-generated images from their search results. This update is in response to user feedback, with many users expressing frustration over the prevalence of AI-generated images that can clutter search results. To use the feature, users can go to the ‘Images’ tab after performing a search and select the new ‘AI images’ dropdown menu. From here, they can choose whether to ‘show’ or ‘hide’ AI-generated content. Additionally, users can enable the filter through their search settings by selecting the ‘Hide AI-Generated Images’ option. The filter is based on open-source blocklists curated by uBlockOrigin and uBlacklist, which aim to reduce the visibility of AI-generated content, though it may not eliminate all such results. DuckDuckGo also plans to release additional filters in the future. This feature was introduced amid growing concerns over the quality of AI-generated content online, often referred to as ‘AI slop.’ A notable example highlighted by DuckDuckGo involved Google’s controversial search results for baby peacocks, where AI-generated images dominated, causing public backlash. As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, DuckDuckGo’s new feature addresses the need for more control over the quality of search results.
