Duolingo Faces New Challenges as Google Translate Expands Language Learning Features with AI
Duolingo, the popular language-learning app, is experiencing increased competition from AI-powered translation tools like Google Translate. Google has introduced new features for its Translate app that allow users to practice Spanish, French, and Portuguese, using AI to create personalized lessons. These lessons are tailored to the learner’s level and focus on both speaking and listening, similar to Duolingo’s core offering. Google’s new live translation features can also assist with real-time conversations, providing both text and audio translations. While Duolingo has built a loyal user base, with 130 million active users, its stock price dropped by 3% following Google’s announcement, though it later rebounded. The company’s CEO, Luis von Ahn, expressed confidence that Duolingo’s gamified approach to language learning, which keeps users engaged, would continue to set it apart from AI models like ChatGPT. Despite the growing competition, Duolingo’s active user growth is still strong, and the company plans to keep innovating to retain its audience.
