Doug Brown, a computer enthusiast who documents vintage computing, discovered the secret while examining the G3’s ROM with specialized tools. The Power Mac G3, produced between 1997 and 1999, shared its ROM across several models. Brown noticed unusual data strings referencing a ‘secret ROM image’ and ‘The Team.’ This led him to investigate further, using the reverse engineering tool Ghidra, which identified a RAM disk driver that could create a special disk if named ‘secret ROM image.’ When this process is followed, the disk contains a file called ‘The Team.’ Opening this file in SimpleText reveals a JPEG photo of the original development team behind the Power Mac G3. The existence of the image was previously known, but no method to view it had been discovered until now. This Easter egg is a relic from an era when Apple engineers occasionally hid such surprises in their products, a practice reportedly ended by Steve Jobs upon his return to Apple in 1997. The discovery has sparked nostalgia and discussion among former Apple engineers and enthusiasts, highlighting a unique chapter in Apple’s history of hidden software secrets.
