Dating apps are increasingly adopting biometric verification technologies like face recognition and iris scanning to combat scams, fake accounts, and AI-generated content. Platforms such as Tinder and Match Group have implemented mandatory tools like Face Check and World ID, which use liveness tests, 3D authentication, and encrypted facial data to verify users. These measures aim to address the surge in dating fraud, with nearly half of U.S. online daters falling victim to scams costing over $4 billion since 2015. However, critics argue that biometric data collection poses significant privacy risks, as verified profiles could still be exploited by scammers using AI tools. Experts warn that normalizing facial scans creates a dangerous precedent for surveillance and weakens user control over personal data. While some laws like Utah’s Digital Identity law attempt to regulate data use, many argue stronger protections are needed to prevent the erosion of privacy in favor of convenience.
