Facebook Revives the Poke Feature to Attract Younger Users
Facebook is reintroducing its poke feature, which has been a part of the platform since its early days but had faded in prominence. The poke button, known for its ambiguous use ranging from flirting to friendly greetings, now features more prominently on mobile profile pages and has a dedicated hub at facebook.com/pokes where users can track their interactions. This reintroduction taps into the Y2K nostalgia trend and reflects an effort by Facebook to engage younger users who have largely shifted to platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. The feature incorporates a gamification aspect similar to Snapchat and TikTok streaks, encouraging daily engagement, which saw a 13-fold increase in poke activity last year. Facebook aims to counter its image as a platform dominated by older generations and political discourse by leveraging this nostalgic and interactive feature.
