Gamers Use Video Game Character Models to Trick Age-Verification Systems
A recent viral case has revealed that age-verification systems relying on facial recognition can be easily fooled using 3D character models from video games. The incident centers around a digital artist and Yakuza franchise fan known as Tamzyn, who demonstrated that a model of Kazuma Kiryu, the iconic protagonist from the Like a Dragon series, could successfully pass an online age-gating process. By importing the model into Blender and following the verification instructions such as tilting the head up, down, and sideways, the system accepted the character as a real person. This method mirrors earlier exploits where gamers employed models of Wallace Breen from Half-Life 2, Sam from Death Stranding, Zbigniew Stolarski from Arma III, and even the Heavy from Team Fortress 2 to bypass digital restrictions. These cases highlight the significant flaws in automated systems introduced under regulations like the UK’s Online Safety Act, which often push for biometric and age-verification measures.
