Astrobee Robots on the ISS: Testing Space Debris Defense Technology

NASA’s Astrobee robots, currently undergoing tests aboard the International Space Station (ISS), could serve as precursors to advanced spacecraft capable of defending against space debris. These autonomous bots, originally designed to assist astronauts by capturing video and conducting experiments, are now being tested for space debris capture. Scientists at NASA Ames Research Center and Kall Morris Inc (KMI) have enhanced Astrobees with biomimetic features, including octopus-like tentacles with gecko-inspired adhesives, allowing them to seize and redirect objects in space.

Recent demonstrations have seen Astrobees successfully capture simulated CubeSats aboard the ISS, with astronaut Suni Williams overseeing their performance. The long-term goal is to develop an autonomous system that can intercept and remove hazardous debris, such as defunct satellites or missile fragments, from orbit. KMI is concurrently developing a new spacecraft, Laelaps, which aims to further this technology by autonomously docking with and repositioning non-functional space objects.

With increasing risks posed by space debris, these innovations may play a critical role in ensuring the safety of astronauts and future space missions. Upcoming tests in April will refine these capabilities, potentially paving the way for large-scale deployment of autonomous debris-removal systems.
