Google Replaces Assistant with Gemini in Smart Home Devices and Launches New Nest Hardware

Google has introduced its Gemini AI chatbot to the Google Home ecosystem, replacing the Google Assistant that has been standard since 2016. With this update, users can interact with Gemini more conversationally and perform complex routines, such as controlling lights, shades, and other devices in one command. The Google Home app has also been redesigned to support Gemini’s capabilities, featuring three tabs for Home, Activity, and Automation, along with faster performance and smoother camera navigation. Google is launching new hardware, including the Google Home Speaker ($100, available spring 2026), Nest Cam Indoor 2K ($100), Nest Cam Outdoor 2K ($150), and Nest Doorbell 2K ($180). These devices provide higher resolution video, improved detection, and richer notifications, with Gemini capable of offering detailed insights about activity in the home. Advanced features are part of the new Google Home Premium subscription, which has Standard ($10/month) and Advanced ($20/month) tiers. Additionally, Walmart will offer budget-friendly Onn cameras and doorbells compatible with Gemini. Gemini Live, available on select devices, allows for conversational interaction and storytelling, though direct action execution is currently limited. Overall, this update marks a significant step in Google’s smart home strategy, combining upgraded AI capabilities with new devices and a more intuitive app interface.
