Google Advances Development of Native Desktop Mode for Android

Google is continuing development on a native desktop mode for Android, aiming to rival features like Samsung DeX and Motorola’s Ready For. This feature, which was initially expected with the Pixel 8 series, brings a more advanced interface when a Pixel phone is connected to an external display. It includes a taskbar with app access, a status bar, and most importantly, support for multiple floating, resizable app windows—mimicking a traditional desktop environment. This mode builds on Android’s earlier freeform window mode seen on tablets but is now optimized for use on external monitors. The system allows multitasking through drag-and-drop features and app snapping, targeting productivity users. Although the feature is not yet ready for public release, it might debut in a later update to Android 16 or even Android 17 in 2026. A key remaining challenge is seamless integration of keyboard and mouse controls across both phone and external display. By embedding desktop mode directly into Android, Google could make this functionality more universal, extending it beyond Pixel devices and encouraging app developers to better support large screen use. This initiative reflects Google’s broader vision for a cohesive Android experience across multiple form factors.
