Google to Discontinue Android Instant Apps in December 2025 Due to Low Usage

Google has officially announced that it will shut down Android Instant Apps by December 2025, citing low user engagement as the primary reason. Introduced in 2017, Instant Apps allowed users to try out lightweight versions of apps and games directly from a web link without the need for installation. This provided a streamlined user experience and offered developers another way to reach potential users. Despite its innovative concept, the feature never gained substantial traction.

The news first came to light after developer Leon Omelan noticed a warning in Android Studio indicating that support for Instant Apps would be removed. This was later confirmed by Google, which stated that publishing and all related APIs would be discontinued, along with tooling support in a future Android Studio release.

Google spokesperson Nia Carter explained that developers are now gravitating towards more effective tools such as AI-powered app discovery features and simultaneous app installs. By reallocating resources away from underused features, Google aims to enhance platforms that better support user engagement and app discovery. The company’s decision adds Instant Apps to its growing list of discontinued services, often referred to as the ‘Google graveyard.’
