Google Partners with Airtel to Combat RCS Spam in India

Google is addressing persistent spam issues with its Rich Communication Services (RCS) platform in India by collaborating with Bharti Airtel, the country’s second-largest telecom operator. Airtel will integrate its network-level spam filtering into the Google Messages app, aiming to reduce unwanted messages and fraud. The partnership follows a history of complaints about unsolicited ads that prompted Google to pause business promotions on the platform in 2022. Despite these efforts, many users still report frustrations with spam. Airtel’s collaboration with Google will allow real-time checks on business messaging, including sender verification and enforcement of do-not-disturb preferences. This integration is described as a global first and marks a significant step toward improving RCS messaging security. India represents a crucial market for RCS, with a large mobile user base and growing digital payment adoption, which has made the region particularly susceptible to spam and fraud. Airtel has also been ramping up anti-spam measures, such as AI-driven systems that have already blocked billions of spam calls and messages. Google hopes to extend this model beyond India to standardize security across the global RCS ecosystem.
