Google Messages to Introduce RCS Invitations for Easier Feature Adoption

Google is taking a new step to promote the adoption of RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging through its Messages app for Android. Hidden code discovered in the latest version of the app suggests that users will soon be able to send invitations to their contacts encouraging them to activate RCS. These invitations may appear if Google Messages detects that a contact hasn’t enabled RCS, using text strings like ‘invite this contact to RCS chat’ and emphasizing benefits like high-quality media sharing and secure messages.

RCS is being positioned as a modern alternative to SMS, offering features such as typing indicators, read receipts, and improved group chat capabilities. However, its adoption has been slow since it’s still optional and requires both parties in a chat to have it enabled. The article also notes that RCS is now compatible with iPhones, which could increase its reach.

Beyond this, Google continues to enhance its Messages app, recently adding features like chat snoozing and animated screen effects. With the release of Android 16, a Material 3 Expressive design update is also expected soon. These updates aim to make Google Messages a more competitive and modern messaging platform.
