Google Unveils $899 Gemini-Powered ‘Googlebook’ Laptops with AI-Integrated Features

Google has officially opened preorders for its new line of ‘Googlebook’ laptops, priced at $899, featuring enhanced AI capabilities powered by Gemini. The devices, set to launch in the U.S. on October 4 and in several international markets on October 5, will come with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Snapdragon X Elite processors, paired with NPUs to support AI features. The Googlebook aims to integrate Gemini’s latest capabilities directly into the laptop experience, offering unique features such as an AI-powered cursor, vibe-coded widgets, and Rambler for AI-enhanced dictation. The AI-powered cursor allows users to interact with content by highlighting text or images, prompting Gemini to analyze or enhance the content. For instance, users can hover over an email to check if it’s suspicious or select images to visualize them together. The Googlebook also targets the K-12 education market, where Chromebooks are widely used, with plans to transition existing Chromebooks to the new Googlebook experience in the future. The devices will be manufactured by major brands including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, featuring materials like aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. They offer up to 14 hours of battery life and include a Glowbar that displays battery level and supports interactive animations. The integration with Android devices is a key feature, allowing seamless app casting from phones to laptops without touching the phone, and a dual app drawer system that combines Googlebook apps with mobile apps. Continue On and Quick Access features enable users to transition apps between devices and access phone files directly on the laptop. The Verge’s review highlights the polished hardware, familiar Chromebook-like OS, and the seamless integration between Android and PC, calling it a potential ‘Trojan horse for Gemini.’ Despite skepticism, the reviewer expresses excitement about the device’s potential. Google’s move represents a significant step in embedding AI directly into the laptop experience, aiming to differentiate itself from traditional Chromebooks and compete in the premium laptop market. The company faces the challenge of proving that the AI integration justifies the higher price point compared to conventional laptops.
