Google Acquires Wiz for $32 Billion to Strengthen Cloud Security

Google has agreed to acquire the cybersecurity start-up Wiz for $32 billion in an all-cash deal, marking its largest acquisition to date. The purchase aims to bolster Google Cloud’s security capabilities and strengthen its position against rivals like Microsoft. Wiz, founded five years ago, has rapidly grown to serve Fortune 100 companies and was last valued at $12 billion. Google previously attempted to acquire Wiz for $23 billion, but the deal fell through as Wiz pursued an IPO that never materialized.

This acquisition underscores Google’s commitment to diversifying its business beyond search and advertising, particularly in cloud computing and cybersecurity. However, the deal faces regulatory scrutiny, as Google is already entangled in antitrust cases regarding its search and advertising dominance. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, emphasized Wiz’s role in tackling emerging security challenges, particularly those associated with AI.

The transaction, expected to close in 2026, aligns with Google Cloud’s broader strategy to compete with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services. Wiz’s integration into Google Cloud will enhance its security offerings while maintaining compatibility with other cloud providers. The acquisition highlights Google’s intent to expand its enterprise services and navigate an increasingly competitive cybersecurity landscape.
