Google Launches AI-Based Language Learning Tools With Gemini Model

Google has unveiled three new AI-powered tools designed to help users learn foreign languages using its Gemini large language model. These tools, accessible via the Google Labs webpage without needing to be downloaded, offer bite-sized, situational learning experiences. ‘Tiny Lesson’ allows users to describe their current scenario to receive contextual vocabulary and grammar suggestions. ‘Slang Hang’ promotes informal language learning by simulating casual dialogues between native speakers. Lastly, ‘Word Cam’ identifies objects in photos taken by users and translates them into their target language. These tools aim to facilitate real-life communication and are available in multiple languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Spanish, and others. Google emphasizes that these features are experimental and temporary, aimed at inspiring developers to explore new use cases for the Gemini model. Although promising, users are advised to double-check some outputs, as AI hallucinations or inaccuracies may occur. This launch positions Google in direct competition with platforms like Duolingo and ChatGPT, which have also integrated AI into language education.
