Google to Build $15 Billion AI Data Centre in Andhra Pradesh, India

Google’s parent company Alphabet plans to invest $15 billion over the next five years to establish an AI data hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. This facility will be part of Google’s global network of AI centres across 12 countries and represents the largest investment in an AI hub outside the United States. The project comes as India becomes an attractive destination for AI and cloud infrastructure, thanks to low data costs and a rapidly growing internet user base. Sundar Pichai, Alphabet CEO, stated that the centre will enhance AI innovation and support enterprise growth in India. The Andhra Pradesh government is supporting the project with subsidised land and electricity, aiming to expand the state’s data centre capacity to 6GW by 2029. The facility will integrate cloud and AI infrastructure with renewable energy and an enhanced fibre-optic network. Data centres like this house servers, storage systems, and network equipment needed for processing, storing, and distributing data. Andhra Pradesh’s data centre industry has experienced rapid growth, nearly tripling since 2019 and surpassing 1GW capacity in 2024. Officials describe the initiative as a major step forward for digital innovation and global competitiveness in the state.
