Google Tool Exploited to Remove Negative Information About Tech CEO

A San Francisco tech CEO, Maury Blackman, has reportedly used a bug in Google’s search tools to erase mentions of his past legal issues, including an arrest for domestic violence. The issue came to light after independent journalist Jack Poulson reported on Blackman’s 2021 arrest, which did not lead to charges but involved troubling details. Over the years, Blackman has attempted to suppress this information using methods such as DMCA takedowns and lawsuits. Most recently, a bug in Google’s ‘Refresh Outdated Content’ tool allowed an unknown actor to remove references to the arrest from search results. This tool was designed to help Google maintain accurate search results by allowing users to report outdated content, but it was exploited by altering URLs to trigger errors, making them disappear from search results. The Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) investigated the situation after Poulson reported the missing articles. Ironically, Blackman is now the CEO of an online reputation management firm called The Transparency Company, which assists in protecting individuals’ online reputations. This incident raises concerns about the vulnerability of search engines to misuse and the consequences of tech executives using such tools to erase unflattering information from public view.
