Google Updates AI Content Labeling to Balance Creativity and Transparency
Google has announced a new feature allowing users to remove visible watermarks from AI-generated content, including images, videos, and audio. This change applies to its Gemini models (Nano Banana, Omni, Lyria) and Google’s video editor, Flow, with support for Search coming soon. The company emphasized that this does not affect invisible SynthID watermarks or C2PA metadata, which remain for transparency. VP Josh Woodward explained the decision reflects a balance between creative control and safety, acknowledging that visible watermarks can hinder professional use but are still necessary for identifying AI-generated content. Users can toggle the visible watermark via Settings > Media Watermark. Additionally, Google is open-sourcing a library called Credentio to help developers integrate validation mechanisms. This follows Anthropic’s inclusion of watermarks in Claude outputs to comply with EU regulations, highlighting ongoing debates about AI content labeling.
