Google Develops Desktop Windowing Mode for Android Phones and Tablets

Google is actively developing a desktop-like experience for Android devices that mirrors Samsung’s DeX platform. This initiative combines two previously separate features: DisplayPort mirroring introduced in Android 14 QPR3 for Pixel 8 and newer, and desktop windowing for the Pixel Tablet seen in Android 15 QPR1. Now, with Android 16 beta, these features come together under ‘desktop windowing on secondary displays.’ Users can interact with their Android phone like a desktop by connecting it to an external display. The setup shows a taskbar with pinned apps, recent apps, and system navigation, and enables multitasking through resizable and movable app windows. It also supports keyboard and trackpad input. The phone remains usable even when this desktop mode is active. Though it’s unclear when this feature will officially launch, its development raises questions about Google’s overall strategy in desktop computing. The project may be intended to support Samsung or could signal broader ambitions like Android-powered laptops. Some users have expressed enthusiasm for a seamless, portable workspace enabled by this technology, suggesting it could transform how smartphones are used professionally. However, wider adoption depends on user habits and the convenience of required accessories like external displays and input devices.
