Google’s AlphaEarth AI Creates Detailed Environmental Maps Using Satellite Data

Google’s AlphaEarth Foundations is an innovative AI model designed to process vast amounts of satellite data to track environmental changes around the world. By using machine learning, AlphaEarth converts satellite imagery into detailed, color-coded maps that showcase a variety of material properties, vegetation types, groundwater sources, and human constructions with a resolution as fine as 10 meters. This AI system utilizes ’embeddings’ to drastically reduce storage needs while improving accuracy by nearly 24% compared to previous models. AlphaEarth has already demonstrated its potential by mapping the challenging Antarctic terrain and identifying subtle changes in Canadian agricultural practices that were previously undetectable. It also powers critical flood and wildfire alerts in Google Search and Maps. Several research groups, including MayBiomas in Brazil and the Global Ecosystems Atlas, are using AlphaEarth for analyzing ecosystems like rainforests and deserts.
