Sergey Brin Reflects on Google Glass Challenges and New AI-Enabled Smart Glasses

During Google I/O 2025, co-founder Sergey Brin openly discussed the difficulties faced with the original Google Glass project, admitting he made many mistakes, particularly due to his lack of experience with consumer electronics supply chains and the challenge of producing smart glasses at an affordable price. Brin expressed optimism about the current development of Android XR smart glasses, which are powered by Google DeepMind’s Project Astra and enhanced with AI capabilities such as live translations and real-time assistance. Unlike the initial Google Glass effort, Google is now partnering with experienced companies like Samsung, Xreal, and Warby Parker to overcome previous supply chain and manufacturing challenges. Google is investing up to $150 million with Warby Parker and taking an equity stake to bolster this initiative. Brin also revealed he has effectively come out of retirement to work closely with Google’s Gemini AI team, helping develop multimodal projects like the video-generating model Veo 3. He emphasized the urgency for computer scientists to focus on AI development. Overall, Brin’s comments highlight both lessons learned from the past and renewed confidence in the future of smart glasses driven by advances in AI and stronger industry partnerships.
