Google Adds Free Gemini Live AI Features to Pixel 9 Series Ahead of Pixel 9a Launch
Google has announced a free upgrade for Pixel 9-series users, granting access to Gemini Live’s advanced AI features, including voice and screen-sharing capabilities. Previously reserved for users with a paid Gemini Advanced subscription, these features allow real-time interaction between users and the AI through the camera or screen. Pixel 9 Pro users already had access via a 2-month trial, but this move opens the features to all Pixel 9 and upcoming Pixel 9a owners. However, users with older Pixel models, such as the Pixel 8 series, are excluded from this update, causing discontent among some existing users.
The timing of this release suggests it’s strategically aligned with the launch of the budget-friendly Pixel 9a, allowing Google to showcase premium AI features without bundling the expensive Google One AI Premium subscription. The update enhances the value of the Pixel 9a without significantly increasing its price.
Additionally, Samsung has introduced similar Gemini Live capabilities for Galaxy S25-series users, with potential plans to extend the update to other models. Unlike Google, Samsung appears more flexible in offering AI upgrades beyond its latest flagship devices. Google’s limited rollout, by contrast, may encourage upgrades to the Pixel 9 series while disappointing users of older models.
