Concerns Raised Over AI-Generated Influencers Promoting New Gay Dating App Goose

A recent WIRED report examines controversy surrounding Goose, an invite-only dating and social app aimed at gay men that markets itself as an alternative to hookup-focused platforms like Grindr. The app, founded by influencer Derek Chadwick and former BeReal growth manager David Aliagas, claims to help users “meet guys through the life you already have.” However, the launch has been overshadowed by allegations that its promotional strategy relies heavily on seemingly fake or AI-generated social media personas.

Multiple Instagram accounts used to promote Goose appear to be newly created, with minimal posting history and unusually high engagement patterns. Investigations suggest that profile photos from these accounts may have been generated or heavily altered using AI tools such as Google Gemini or SynthID-detectable systems. These accounts allegedly contacted users through direct messages or added them to “Close Friends” stories, inviting them to join the app using referral codes and identical scripted messaging.

The campaign has raised concerns among users and observers about deceptive marketing practices. Critics argue that the use of AI-generated influencers without clear disclosure may violate platform policies and advertising regulations, including Federal Trade Commission guidelines in the United States and emerging state-level laws requiring transparency in AI-generated advertising content.

Despite skepticism, Goose has gained traction in app store rankings, reaching high positions in lifestyle app downloads shortly after launch. The controversy has sparked broader debate about the increasing use of synthetic media in marketing, particularly in niche social platforms, and whether users can reliably distinguish between authentic and artificially generated online personas. The app’s creators have not publicly responded to detailed requests for comment regarding the allegations.
