Gouach introduces modular e-bike battery for easier maintenance and longer life

French startup Gouach has developed a modular e-bike battery, the Infinite Battery, aimed at reducing electronic waste and simplifying maintenance. Unlike conventional e-bike batteries that are sealed and difficult to repair, Gouach’s system allows users to replace individual 18650 battery cells using a screwdriver. The battery comes with a Bluetooth-connected app for real-time monitoring of cell performance and temperature. The design is compatible with around 90% of existing e-bike brands and meets safety standards like IP67 and UL 2271.

CEO Alexandre Vallette highlighted the extensive trial and error behind creating reliable, vibration-resistant battery connections without welding. Gouach engineered custom PCBs with flexible contacts to ensure durability. The casing was also redesigned after initial failures in a bike-sharing pilot, resulting in a fire-resistant and waterproof shell.

Gouach plans to offer the battery in 36V and 48V configurations and is targeting three markets: e-bike manufacturers, existing e-bike owners, and DIY bike builders. Compatibility with Bosch mid-drive motors, which use encrypted communication protocols, was a key technical challenge the company claims to have overcome.

Backed by crowdfunding and venture capital, Gouach aims to begin European deliveries in June 2025, followed by the U.S., depending on trade conditions. The company advocates for a shift in how people view and maintain e-bike batteries, promoting sustainability through modularity.
