Grammarly Introduces AI-Powered Writing Feedback Modeled on Famous Authors

Grammarly, recently rebranded as Superhuman, has expanded its AI features to include an “Expert Review” tool that offers writing feedback modeled on both living and deceased authors, scientists, and scholars. Users can receive suggestions inspired by figures such as Stephen King, Neil deGrasse Tyson, William Zinsser, and Carl Sagan, even though these individuals have not given permission or participated in the process. The AI agents are trained on the authors’ published works to provide style and content suggestions relevant to the user’s text. While the feature aims to enhance writing by simulating expert critique, it raises ethical concerns about using the work of living and deceased individuals without consent. Academics, including Vanessa Heggie and C.E. Aubin, have criticized the tool for treating scholarship as extractable content and for reanimating deceased authors in a way that ignores their personhood. Questions remain about the legality and effectiveness of such AI-generated reviews, as well as the potential impact on academic integrity and educational practices. Despite these controversies, the platform continues to integrate other AI functionalities such as paraphrasing, humanizing text, grading, and detecting LLM-generated phrases.
