At the 2025 Nvidia GTC event, Seagate demonstrated NVMe-native hard disk drives (HDDs) integrated with Nvidia’s BlueField DPU and AIStore software, showcasing a new direction in storage architecture aimed at AI applications. These NVMe HDD prototypes, based on heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology and built with 7nm silicon, combined 4TB SSDs for caching with 32TB HDDs to achieve 256TB of total storage at a 3GB/s data rate—delivering performance on par with high-capacity SSDs but at a sixth of the cost. The push toward NVMe as a common interface across storage types, replacing SAS and SATA, could significantly reduce hardware overhead, system complexity, and power consumption in data centers. Seagate also hinted that major cloud service providers are currently testing these drives, and mass adoption could begin by 2026, particularly with the advent of high-capacity dual actuator drives.
