Modder Demonstrates Experimental CPU Waterblock Using Modified IHS and DIY Bucket Reservoir
A PC hardware modder has demonstrated an unconventional approach to CPU cooling by repurposing a CPU’s Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) as a waterblock. Using CNC machinery, the modder carved cooling channels directly into the IHS of an Intel Core i9-14900KS processor, creating a rudimentary waterblock. The setup utilized a plastic bucket as a temporary coolant reservoir, with manual fluid regulation between containers. While innovative, the DIY solution showed significant thermal limitations compared to commercial waterblocks, with temperature fluctuations and reduced contact area between the cooling solution and CPU die. The experiment highlights the technical challenges of effective heat dissipation in high-performance processors, particularly when using non-standard cooling methods. The modder’s work serves as an educational demonstration of thermal management principles rather than a practical cooling solution, emphasizing the engineering complexities involved in modern liquid cooling systems.
