Exploring Technologies to Eliminate PFAS, the ‘Forever Chemicals’

PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’, are synthetic substances that do not break down in the environment. They are widely used in products like non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and food packaging due to their water and grease resistance. However, these chemicals have been linked to serious health risks, including cancers and reproductive issues. As their harmful effects become more recognized, researchers and clean-tech companies are developing methods to eliminate PFAS. Among the leading technologies being explored are electrochemical oxidation (EO), supercritical water oxidation (SCWO), and hydrothermal alkaline treatment (HALT). EO uses electric currents to break down PFAS in contaminated water, while SCWO utilizes high pressure and temperature to destroy the carbon-fluorine bonds in PFAS. Although these methods show promise, they are not without challenges, including concerns about toxic byproducts. Companies are also working with the US Department of Defense, where PFAS contamination is a significant issue, to test these technologies. As the demand for PFAS destruction grows, especially with increasing regulation and lawsuits, companies are striving to scale these solutions. However, scaling up remains a challenge, as the technologies need to be both effective and cost-efficient.
