Huawei’s Vision: Fiber-To-The-Room to Drive Future Communications

At the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, Huawei’s Chairman, Xu Zhijun (also known as Eric Xu), discussed the future of telecommunications, highlighting the growth potential of Fiber-To-The-Room (FTTR) technology. Xu emphasized that by the end of 2025, China would have 75 million FTTR installations, while other countries combined would have only 500,000. FTTR, which delivers fiber-optic connections directly to individual rooms, promises several benefits. It is expected to improve internet speeds, reduce Wi-Fi dead zones, and support the deployment of new productivity-enhancing technologies. This could also result in more profitable service packages for telecom carriers. Xu further pointed out high-growth user groups, such as delivery riders and livestream influencers, who consume far more data than average users, and could become key targets for telecom carriers. Although FTTR is still relatively new, Xu believes that collaboration between telecom providers and platforms to offer high-resolution video content will be essential for future industry success. Huawei, a global telecom giant, continues to be deeply involved in providing solutions to telcos, especially outside Western markets, where concerns about its close ties to the Chinese government persist.
