Hugging Face Unveils Improved, Affordable SO-101 3D-Printed Robotic Arm for Developers
Hugging Face, a company renowned for its AI developer platform, has introduced the SO-101, a programmable and 3D-printable robotic arm designed for basic object manipulation and household tasks. The SO-101 is an evolution of last year’s SO-100 model, developed in partnership with The Robot Studio, and maintains an accessible starting price of $100. The new model boasts easier assembly and upgraded motors that reduce friction and improve load-bearing capabilities. Equipped with a camera, the SO-101 can be trained using reinforcement learning, enabling it to perform tasks such as picking up and sorting objects. The arm is being marketed through collaborations with The Robot Studio, WowRobo, Seeed Studio, and PartaBot, with final prices ranging from $100 to $500 depending on assembly and import tariffs. Hugging Face is also expanding its robotics portfolio, having recently acquired the French startup Pollen Robotics. The acquisition brings the humanoid robot Reachy 2 under Hugging Face’s umbrella, with plans to make its codebase accessible for developer contributions. These moves signal Hugging Face’s growing commitment to democratizing robotics and AI development by providing affordable, open-source hardware and software solutions.
