Hugging Face introduces Open Computer Agent to showcase progress in agentic AI

Hugging Face has launched the Open Computer Agent, a free, cloud-based AI agent capable of using a Linux virtual machine to perform basic computer tasks. The tool, similar to OpenAI’s Operator, can operate applications like Firefox and respond to natural language instructions such as finding locations on Google Maps. However, it currently suffers from performance issues, including sluggish response times, difficulty handling complex queries like booking flights, and inability to bypass CAPTCHA tests. Users may also face virtual queue wait times depending on demand. The project is not aimed at producing a cutting-edge solution but rather at demonstrating how open-source vision models, particularly Qwen-VL with grounding abilities, are evolving in their ability to handle more complex workflows. Hugging Face’s initiative aligns with broader industry interest in agentic AI technologies. A KPMG survey found that 65% of companies are testing AI agents, and the market is forecast to grow from $7.84 billion in 2025 to $52.62 billion by 2030. This release underlines the growing capabilities and accessibility of AI tools powered by open-source models, even if they still face notable limitations.
