Top Twitch Streamers Raise Privacy Concerns Over Discord’s New Age Verification Measures

Several prominent content creators have voiced concerns over Discord’s upcoming age verification requirements, arguing that the new measures could put users’ sensitive data at risk. The platform plans to introduce a ‘teen-by-default’ experience worldwide from March, restricting access to age-sensitive content unless users are verified as adults. While Discord says it will attempt to determine adulthood based on existing user data, some individuals may be required to submit a facial scan or official identification.

Alastair, a US-based British Twitch streamer known as Eret with over one million followers, expressed distrust in the platform’s data practices, citing a previous incident in which around 70,000 users’ ID images were potentially exposed following a breach involving a third-party age verification company. Although Discord ended its relationship with that firm and maintains that facial scans remain on users’ devices and that IDs are deleted after verification, skepticism persists.

Other high-profile streamers, including Tubbo and Pikachulita, warned that requesting 3D facial scans or official documents could set a troubling precedent for social media companies. They raised concerns about how such sensitive information might be stored, protected, or potentially shared with authorities.

Experts say the backlash highlights the broader challenge tech companies face in balancing child protection with user privacy and trust. While streamers agree on the importance of safeguarding minors online, they argue that stronger transparency and privacy-preserving technologies are necessary. For many creators, the debate reflects deeper anxieties about digital identity, data security, and corporate accountability in online communities.
