Open-Source Benchmarking GUI Designed for Programmers Now Available

Malte Skarupke, a performance-focused programmer and game developer, has open-sourced a custom GUI tool designed to streamline and enhance benchmarking workflows. Originally built out of frustration with the limitations of existing tools like Google Benchmark, his GUI emphasizes structured data collection, repeatable measurements, and insightful visualization. Key features include the use of SQLite databases to store benchmark results along with user-defined tags, robust error handling for partial runs, and seamless profiler integration. The tool handles the ‘combinatorial explosion’ of benchmark permutations across data structures, operations, build types, and compilers. By running benchmarks in new processes to take advantage of ASLR, it minimizes compiler-related noise and provides more accurate readings. Visualization is kept simple yet effective: log-scale x-axis and linear Y/X axis to highlight meaningful differences in algorithm performance. While some benchmark suites try to be clever with statistical modeling, this GUI opts for transparency, showing all data points and preferring median over minimum values. Overall, it aims to make benchmarking not only more reliable and reproducible, but also easier to manage for complex experiments, including those outside traditional programming, such as machine learning training.
