Philips Hue Upgrades Lights with Built-in Motion Sensing Feature

Philips Hue has announced the launch of a new feature called Hue MotionAware, which upgrades its smart bulbs to include built-in motion sensing through radio-frequency (RF) sensing technology. This feature enables Hue lights to detect movement without requiring separate motion sensors. Available for free with a firmware update, it works with most Hue lights manufactured after 2014, provided the user has the new Hue Bridge Pro ($99). The system works by detecting disruptions in the Zigbee signal between bulbs, allowing them to respond to motion. This is a major upgrade, and the motion-sensing zones can be used to trigger automations, such as turning lights on or off. MotionAware also integrates with the Hue Secure security platform, enabling users to trigger alerts and security responses. However, some features, like security notifications, require a subscription. The system is built on RF sensing technology, which has been refined for reliability and low latency. Despite its potential, the system is currently limited to four motion zones per bridge. The technology is part of a broader trend of making smart homes more ambient and responsive, with future possibilities extending beyond simple motion detection.
