Instagram Now Supports Native 3:4 Photo Aspect Ratio for All Uploads

Instagram has announced a significant update for photographers and everyday users alike: the platform now supports the native 3:4 aspect ratio used by most smartphone cameras, including iPhones. Previously, Instagram limited vertical photos to a 4:5 aspect ratio, which often required users to crop their images or add black bars to fit the platform’s constraints. This update, revealed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Threads, means that photos taken in 3:4 will now be displayed exactly as captured, without any forced cropping or formatting adjustments. This change applies to both single photo posts and carousels, ensuring consistent presentation across the platform. The move is part of Instagram’s gradual shift away from its original square-photo roots, reflecting the growing dominance of vertical content in both photography and video. Earlier in the year, Instagram also began displaying photos in rectangular frames within user profile grids.
