Instagram’s Edits App Enhances Mobile Video Creation to Compete with CapCut
Instagram’s new Edits app is Meta’s latest push to attract video creators by offering robust mobile editing tools designed specifically for crafting engaging Reels. As video content increasingly dominates the platform, the Edits app—launched last month on both Apple and Android devices—serves as a dedicated companion for streamlined video creation. The app is positioned as a direct competitor to ByteDance’s CapCut, which is widely used by TikTok creators. Although Edits briefly surpassed CapCut in Apple’s free download charts during its launch week, it now lags far behind, sitting outside the top 100 downloads on iOS, while CapCut remains a top 10 app. Meta has not disclosed current usage statistics for Edits. Product lead Tom Bender emphasizes that the development strategy centers on rapid iteration and listening to creators, with new features rolling out monthly or even weekly. Recent updates include enhanced overlay effects, video filters, and soon, the ability to adjust clip volumes across projects. An in-app teleprompter is also set to launch, making scripted content easier for creators. Unlike desktop editing software such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut, Edits is strictly designed for mobile users, focusing on simplicity and integration with Instagram. The app already offers preproduction tools like an Inspiration tab for saving trending Reels and video ideas, and it provides post-publishing analytics within the app. Importantly, Edits allows all users to export videos in high quality without watermarks, a feature that gives it an edge over CapCut, which stamps watermarks unless users pay for a subscription. While Edits currently lacks some of CapCut’s advanced AI-powered features, it is completely free. Bender notes that AI automation for tasks like cutouts and effects is an area of future growth for Edits, aiming to reduce tedious manual work while keeping human creativity at the core. The team is also exploring AI-driven analytics to suggest trending topics tailored to creators’ audiences. Ultimately, Edits signals Instagram’s commitment to becoming a more video-centric platform, encouraging creators to make better content and boosting engagement for viewers.
