Instagram introduces alerts for parents when teens search for suicide or self-harm content
Instagram will begin alerting parents if their underage children repeatedly search for content related to suicide or self-harm. This change will affect users in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada who have parental supervision enabled. Notifications will be delivered via email, text, WhatsApp, or directly on Instagram, depending on parental settings. Alongside alerts, parents will have access to expert resources to guide sensitive conversations with their children. The update will also soon include alerts if a teen discusses suicide or self-harm with Meta AI. Despite these measures, the Molly Rose Foundation criticised the move as potentially causing panic and leaving parents unprepared, highlighting that harmful content is still accessible through Instagram’s algorithm. Meta asserts that it actively removes or restricts content promoting self-harm or suicide, blocks related search terms, and directs users to local support organisations. Instagram teen accounts, designed for users under 16, have default privacy protections and require parental consent for changes. The platform continues to face legal challenges in the US over claims its apps negatively impact young people’s mental health. Support organisations such as Samaritans are available for those in emotional distress.
