Intel Releases Media Driver 2025Q2 Providing Panther Lake Video Encoding and Enhanced HDR Playback on Linux

The Intel Media Driver 2025Q2 has been released, marking the latest quarterly update dedicated to enabling and improving open-source video acceleration for Intel graphics hardware on Linux systems. A primary highlight of this release is the completion of video encoding support for the forthcoming Panther Lake system-on-chips (SoCs), ensuring that the driver is in line with kernel-level readiness in Linux 6.17 and updated OpenGL and Vulkan support. The VA-API-based Intel Media Driver now fully supports video encoding on Panther Lake hardware, which is an essential step for Linux users and developers working with next-generation Intel graphics platforms.

In addition to Panther Lake features, the new driver includes stability improvements for HDR (High Dynamic Range) video playback, benefiting multimedia applications on supported platforms. There are also several fixes aimed at maintaining compatibility with older generations of Intel graphics, dating back to Broadwell-based hardware. The Intel Media Driver continues to support a wide range of integrated and discrete graphics devices through its open-source VA-API implementation on Linux.

Alongside the media driver, Intel has launched the oneVPL GPU Runtime 2025Q2, further expanding media stack capabilities. Notably, this runtime now supports Panther Lake video encoding and adds compatibility with VVC Decoding Level 6.3, further enhancing the media performance for developers working on Intel’s latest hardware.
