iRobot Introduces Eight New Roombas with Lidar Navigation and Mapping

iRobot has unveiled eight new Roomba models, marking a major shift in its robotic vacuum lineup. These new devices integrate lidar navigation and mapping, a feature long used by competitors, to enhance mapping accuracy and cleaning efficiency. The lineup starts at $299 and goes up to $999, offering various features such as auto-empty docks, dust compactors, and dual spinning mop pads. The Roomba Plus 505 Combo, the most advanced model, includes AI-powered obstacle detection and a multifunctional dock for mop washing and drying.

This product overhaul comes after a challenging 2024 for iRobot, which saw leadership changes, an abandoned Amazon acquisition, and significant layoffs. With increasing competition from Chinese brands like Roborock and Dreame, iRobot is adapting to market demands by incorporating popular features such as lidar towers and higher suction power. The company has also launched a new app with real-time cleaning visualization.

While the new Roombas offer advanced technology, some critics argue that iRobot is shifting from its traditional innovation-driven approach to a more competitive, market-driven strategy. The new models will be available for preorder starting March 18 in the US and select European markets.
