Both techniques leveraged the fact that the motion of the pixelated content across frames provides new data points, which can be compiled into a clearer image.

The success of the challenge underscores how modern tools — especially those powered by AI and neural networks — have made it significantly easier to reverse-engineer visual obfuscations. Jeff concludes that motion within pixelated or blurred content offers exploitable data, making such censorship techniques unreliable. He now recommends using solid color overlays for sensitive information instead.
