Japanese Solar Cars Complete 3,000-Kilometer Race Across Australia with Limited Power
Futuristic solar-powered vehicles recently participated in the 17th Bridgestone World Solar Challenge (BWSC), a 3,000-kilometer race across the rugged Outback of Australia. Despite relying on enough power to operate a hair dryer, these cars reached speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour, completing the race in just four and a half days. The event, which started in Darwin on August 24 and ended in Adelaide, saw the participation of teams from several universities, including Japan’s Tokai University, Wakayama University, Osaka Institute of Technology, and Kogakuin University. The Tokai University’s car, the Tokai Challenger, placed fifth in its category. The race posed new challenges this year, as it was held at the end of the Australian winter, resulting in 20% less sunshine and limited battery storage. Teams focused on improving energy efficiency by designing aerodynamic, lightweight vehicles. The competition showcased innovative solar technology, with the top teams using shark-like fins to capture crosswinds for added stability and propulsion. The solar race also served as a testbed for electric vehicle technologies that are increasingly being used in commercial cars, such as Toyota’s hybrid Prius with an optional rooftop solar panel.
