Virgin Atlantic and Joby Partner to Launch Electric Air Taxi Service in the UK

Virgin Atlantic has announced a partnership with Joby Aviation to introduce an air taxi service in the UK, leveraging Joby’s all-electric aircraft. The five-seat aircraft, equipped with six rotors, can take off and land vertically and reach speeds of up to 200 mph. The service aims to provide quick transportation, such as an 8-minute flight from Heathrow to Canary Wharf or a 15-minute journey between Manchester and Leeds. However, the launch depends on Joby securing type certification in the US and later in the UK.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority is assessing how air taxi services will integrate into existing airport infrastructure, particularly in areas such as airspace management and charging facilities. The companies plan to offer fares comparable to premium ride-hailing services.

Joby, backed by investments from Delta Air Lines and Toyota, is progressing through the FAA’s certification process and expects to carry passengers in the US by late 2025. Despite advancements in the electric air taxi sector, challenges remain, including regulatory hurdles and infrastructure adaptation. Similar companies, such as Archer Aviation and Volocopter, are also working on launching air taxi services, though some, like Lilium, have struggled financially.
