DHS Develops Smart Glasses for Biometric Surveillance in the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is developing advanced smart glasses, dubbed ‘ICE Glasses,’ designed to provide federal agents with real-time biometric identification capabilities. According to leaked budget documents, these glasses can access vast federal biometric databases to identify individuals remotely using facial recognition, walking gait, and other biometric data. While the official focus is on identifying ‘illegal aliens,’ insiders warn the technology could affect all Americans, including protesters, due to its potential use in general government surveillance. ICE Glasses build on technologies previously used by the military and intelligence community, which already employed devices capable of collecting non-cooperative biometrics, such as fingerprints and iris scans, to track individuals in conflict zones. Civilian applications raise privacy, ethical, and data security concerns, echoing the backlash seen with early commercial smart glasses like Google Glass. The system will integrate with existing watchlists, enabling agents to receive instant alerts about persons of interest. DHS aims to have operational prototypes ready by September 2027.
