Kenya Launches National Earth Observation Data Sharing Framework

On Monday, the Kenya Space Agency (KSA) officially rolled out the Kenya Earth Observation (EO) Data Sharing Framework 2026, a major step in improving how space-derived data is used across the country. The initiative, supported by the British High Commission in Kenya, the Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability (RIIS), and VIFFA Consult, aims to create a single platform where government bodies, universities, private companies, and development partners can share and access Earth observation information. According to Hillary Kipkosgey, KSA’s Director General, the framework will help establish a well-coordinated national ecosystem for space data, ensuring that stakeholders collaborate to get maximum benefit from satellite-derived insights. Part of the framework involves setting up the National Earth Observation Data Council (NEODC), which will oversee and guide the management of EO data in Kenya. This council is expected to improve governance, ensure sustainable usage, and strengthen cooperation among institutions that rely on geospatial and environmental information. The initiative aligns with KSA’s 2023-2027 strategic plan and highlights Kenya’s commitment to leveraging space science and technology for sustainable development, economic growth, and better decision-making in sectors like agriculture, natural resource management, and urban planning. Overall, the launch signals Kenya’s increasing capacity to harness satellite data for national planning and innovation.
