Lego introduces Smart Bricks blending digital and physical play
At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Lego revealed its new ‘Smart Bricks’—sensor-equipped building blocks designed to interact with movement, light, and sound. The Danish toy manufacturer describes this innovation as its most significant in almost five decades, aiming to merge digital interactivity with the creativity of physical play. The Smart Bricks measure the iconic 2×4 size but include a microchip, accelerometer, sensors, lights, and a sound synthesizer. They form part of Lego’s broader Smart Play System, which also introduces Smart Minifigures and Smart Tags that can trigger different responses when they detect one another. Demonstrations included a Lego cake that played a cheer when ‘candles’ were blown out and a helicopter that made whooshing and crash sounds depending on movement.
However, some child development and play experts have expressed reservations. Josh Golin of Fairplay argued that such technologies might erode the imaginative aspects that define traditional Lego’s appeal, where children’s own creativity animates their constructions. Professor Andrew Manches from the University of Edinburgh acknowledged these concerns but also welcomed Lego’s attempt to combine digital and physical experiences in a balanced way. He also cautioned that the rise of smart and AI-integrated toys raises ongoing questions about privacy and security. Lego’s executives counter that digital integration enhances play opportunities rather than replaces them. This launch continues Lego’s strategy of blending traditional play with modern technology, following past collaborations with Nintendo, Epic Games, and augmented reality projects since 2017.
