Liux Launches Sustainable Microcar to Compete with Chinese EVs
Spanish startup Liux is entering the microcar market with its upcoming electric vehicle, the Liux Big, aiming to challenge Chinese competitors by emphasizing sustainability. The company’s co-founders, Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros and David Sancho, argue that a fully sovereign supply chain is unattainable but prioritize recyclability and circularity in their design. The car features a linen-based biocomposite body that can be recycled, rechargeable batteries for home use, and plans to offer two battery versions (15 kWh and 20 kWh) with a cargo variant in the future. Liux has secured Europe-wide homologation and expects to start sales by mid-2027, backed by €16 million in funding. The startup’s target market includes urban dwellers over 55 years old, positioning the Liux Big as a second car for households rather than replacing traditional ownership. While the microcar category faces challenges with size limitations and safety standards, Liux aims to provide an affordable, sustainable alternative below €18,000 before subsidies. The company also explores partnerships for B2B fleets and autonomous features, reflecting its focus on innovation beyond just vehicle production.
