New Features Coming to macOS Tahoe 26’s Messages App

macOS Tahoe 26, set for release later this year, introduces several exciting new features for the Messages app. Among the key updates is the ability to customize message backgrounds, offering a more personalized touch to conversations. Users can choose from a variety of built-in options, or upload their own images, including using the Image Playground to create custom designs. Another notable addition is the ability to create polls within conversations. This feature is especially useful for coordinating group activities, like deciding on a dinner venue or movie choice. As people vote, results are updated in real-time. Additionally, Apple has improved group messaging with typing indicators, allowing users to see who is currently typing in a conversation. In response to the growing issue of spam, macOS Tahoe 26 introduces enhanced spam filters that automatically detect and filter out unwanted messages. These can be reviewed through a new ‘Spam’ filter. For better organization, messages from unknown senders are now placed into a designated section, making it easier to manage them. Search functionality has also been improved, allowing for more natural language queries. Users can search for specific topics or conversations, such as “photos of dad during our trip to New York,” and find relevant messages. Lastly, the introduction of Live Translation allows users to communicate seamlessly across language barriers, with real-time translation available for both sent and received messages. This update, which will be available as a public beta later this month, aims to enhance user experience and communication on Mac devices.
