Meta Explores Paid Subscription for Ad-Free Facebook and Instagram in the UK

Meta is contemplating the introduction of a paid subscription service in the UK that would allow users to access Facebook and Instagram without advertisements. This plan is part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to address data protection concerns and offer users more control over their data. The company already offers similar subscriptions in the EU for €5.99 per month. Meta’s spokesperson confirmed that they are engaging with the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) on this matter, following a consultation expected in 2024. The ICO has highlighted the importance of ensuring that users can freely give consent regarding the use of their data. Meta’s advertising model, which heavily relies on personalized ads, currently keeps its platforms free for users. Other social platforms, such as TikTok and Snapchat, are also exploring ad-free subscription options as they seek to diversify their revenue streams. However, some experts believe that the uptake of such a subscription in the UK may be limited, as many users prefer to pay with their data rather than real money. Meta’s potential move could be seen as an effort to future-proof its business amid increasing regulatory scrutiny over data collection practices.
